Pro-democracy group celebrates Nigerian youths on International Youth Day

As the world marks International Youth Day, the Great Democratic Youth Movement (GDYM) has extended its heartfelt commendation and solidarity to Nigerian youths, celebrating their resilience, creativity, and pivotal role in shaping the nation’s future.

In a statement released by the National Coordinator of the GDYM, Comrade Justice Tobore Jerome, the youth group emphasized the critical importance of empowering young people in national development and democratic participation. The movement described Nigerian youths as “the heartbeat of the nation” and urged stakeholders to invest more in youth-focused policies, education, employment, innovation, and leadership development.

“Today, we celebrate the incredible energy, strength, and potential of Nigerian youths who continue to rise above numerous challenges,” the statement read. “From technology to the arts, from activism to entrepreneurship, Nigerian youths are breaking barriers and redefining the narrative across the globe.”

The GDYM also used the occasion to highlight its ongoing programs aimed at fostering youth participation in governance, promoting civic education, and creating platforms for leadership incubation at both local and national levels.

The movement reiterated its commitment to advocating for increased representation of young people in decision-making processes, emphasizing the need for inclusive policies that reflect the aspirations of Nigeria’s dynamic youth population.

Speaking on this year’s United Nations theme for International Youth Day, “Youth for Climate Action and Sustainable Development,” the GDYM called on young Nigerians to take the lead in championing sustainability efforts, environmental protection, and responsible citizenship.

The pro-democracy youth group called on the federal and state governments to prioritise and promote programmes that are beneficial to Nigerian youths and create an enabling environment for youths to participate in governance as the youths are the leaders of tomorrow.

“The future of Nigeria lies in the hands of its youth. We call on the government, private sector, and civil society to create more enabling environments where young people can thrive, innovate, and lead,” the statement added.

Finally, the youth group calls for unity among youth across all regions and backgrounds, urging them to remain steadfast in the pursuit of a better, more just, and prosperous Nigeria.
