The Great Democratic Youth Movement (GDYM) strongly condemns the assassination attempt on Rt. Hon. Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu, Member representing Ethiope East/Ethiope West Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, which occurred during the All Progressives Congress (APC) Local Government Area Congress in Ethiope West, Delta State.

Reports from the congress indicate that violence broke out at the venue (Ovade) following heightened tensions surrounding the exercise. The situation reportedly escalated into gunfire and chaos, putting the lives of party members, leaders, and the general public at grave risk. We are deeply alarmed that a democratic gathering intended to strengthen internal party processes degenerated into an incident that nearly claimed lives.
GDYM unequivocally denounces this reprehensible act and any form of political violence. Democracy thrives on dialogue, inclusion, and peaceful competition, not intimidation, coercion, or bloodshed.
We wish to reiterate that an attack on one elected representative is an attack on the democratic rights of the people they serve. Therefore the attack on Rt. Hon. Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu, is an attack on the entire people of Ethiope East/Ethiope West Federal Constituency. We condemn the barbaric act allegedly carried out by thugs loyal to the state government.
We call on all relevant security agencies to immediately launch a thorough and transparent investigation into this incident, identify the perpetrators, and ensure they are brought to justice. Political actors must also exercise restraint and prioritize peace to prevent further escalation.
GDYM stands in solidarity with Rt. Hon. Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu, her family, supporters, and the people of Ethiope Federal Constituency at this critical time. We urge all party faithful and stakeholders to remain calm and committed to peaceful democratic engagement.
We commended Rt. Hon. Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu, for appealing for calm among party members and urging supporters to refrain from retaliatory actions that could escalate tensions within the party and in the broader community at large.
Nigeria’s democracy must not be undermined by violence. The safety of elected officials and citizens alike must remain paramount in all political activities.
Signed: Comrade Justice Tobore Jerome, National Coordinator, Great Democratic Youth Movement (GDYM).
