How Pastor Nathaniel Bassey Rose From Nobody to Performing at President Trump’s Presidential Prayer

In the world of gospel music, few names resonate as powerfully as Pastor Nathaniel Bassey. Known for his soulful trumpet sounds, heart-stirring worship songs, and undeniable passion for God, Nathaniel Bassey’s journey is nothing short of extraordinary. But how did a young man from Nigeria rise from humble beginnings to performing at an event as prestigious as President Trump’s Presidential Prayer Breakfast? This is the story of faith, talent, and unwavering dedication.

Humble Beginnings in Lagos, Nigeria

Born in Lagos, Nigeria in 1981, Nathaniel Bassey was raised in a Christian home where music and faith intertwined seamlessly. He hails from Uyo Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom state. From a young age, he displayed a profound love for music and often found himself captivated by the sound of jazz and gospel tunes. He was particularly drawn to the trumpet, an instrument that would later become his signature mark in the gospel music industry. He attributes his early beginnings in Christianity to Late Pastor Eskor Mfon, of the Redeem Christian Church of God Church, City of God Parish, who he claims led him in the path of Christ and made sure he didn’t stray away in his youth.

Despite financial challenges and societal limitations, Nathaniel remained focused on his passion. According to him, he once had the opportunity to go and further his studies in the UK and abandon his ministry pursuits, but he declined the offer, much to the dismay of his peers back then who thought he was going crazy. He even said his zea and love for God and the things of God made his siblings to think he was crazy. He started small, performing in local churches and small gatherings, always giving his best regardless of the size of the audience.

Answering the Call to Ministry

Nathaniel’s journey took a spiritual turn when he felt a clear calling from God to not just be a musician, but a minister of the gospel through music. He understood that his talent was not just for entertainment but for worship and leading people into the presence of God.

In 2008, Nathaniel released his debut album “Elohim”, with the approval and Nod from Pastor E.A Adeboye, the General Overseer of Redeem Christian Church of God. It wasn’t long before he became a Pastor at The Youth Church of The Redeem Christian Church of God, The Oasis. In a short while, his song “Imela” became a global anthem, crossing cultural and geographical boundaries. This song, along with other hits like “Onise Iyanu” and *”Olowogbogboro”, established Nathaniel Bassey as a force to reckon with in the gospel music scene.
