A chieftain of the Labour Party, Barrister Kenneth Okonkwo, has maintained that the verdict of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal does not matter if the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) does not upload the full results of the February 25 poll.
Okonkwo called INEC a “failed organization that cannot even live up to the dictates of the law.”
Supreme Court Judgement Didn’t Reflect Will Of The People – Kenneth Okonkwo
Nollywood Actor, Lawyer and Political Activist, Kenneth Okonkwo said the judgement delivered by the Supreme Court Yesterday that upheld the election of the current president, His Excellency Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Okonkwo argued that the Supreme Court’s decision regarding Tinubu’s presidency was constitutional, not democratic. He suggested that the final verdict delivered by the Judges was based on the legal framework and bias of a select few, and that it did not reflect the will of the people. On why he used the term ‘Constitutionality’, Mr Okonkwo said that according to the constitution in Section 235, the judgement of the Supreme Court is final but that the verdict did not reflect what the people really wanted because he argued that Democracy is the Government of the People by the People and of the People. Okonkwo also said that he noticed yesterday that Justice John Inyang Okoro before delivering the verdict looked to his left and right and said to his fellow justices that they should admit that non-uploading of the results in real time for everyone to view reduced the confidence of the people in the election.
He further said that according to the Section 62 subsection 2 and 3 of the electoral act, INEC were supposed to compile the results polling unit by polling unit until they get the final winner and that every results gotten by INEC can be shown to any political party that demands to view it. In summary, his statement implied that the power of the people, which is the power of democracy was taken away from them by the verdict of the Supreme Court.
