This are interesting times indeed in Nigeria as the Supreme Court began their proceedings towards the legal battle between Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi and his Excellency Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu today.
Atiku Abubakar had earlier on went to court in the United States to coerce Tinubu former school, Chicago State University to release his transcripts. But that is not the end of the matter. According to reports coming from Sahara Reporters, the FBI had said that they will release some files they have on Tinubu while he was a resident in the United States and make them public this month. President Tinubu had since filed a motion to block those purported releases. This case was filed in the US District Court for the District of Columbia on Friday. The US government will respond on Monday to President Tinubu’s motion to intervene in a court case regarding the release of records related to his residency in the United States.
Tinubu argued that the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) is intended to increase transparency in government activities, not to disclose the personal records of individuals. The Nigerian president stated that the FOIA was enacted to provide the public with access to government information, and that disclosing personal records would be a violation of privacy. President Tinubu emphasized that the FOIA should be used to promote government accountability, not to invade the privacy of individuals.
